<description>I carried out a research project at Leybourne between 1975 and 1980, on &#039;Research and design for leisure and play for people with Mental Handicap&#039; (Now , Learning difficulties, challanging behavoiur autistic spectrum disorder and a very wide spectrum of very individual needs).
It was a pioneering project which was a precurser to Sensory rooms, Snoezelen, relaxation rooms, and the understanding of the importance of Sensory development.
We created one of the first Soft Play Rooms for adults with Rupert Oliver and a number of other special environments as well as many individual pieces of equipment for peoples specific needs. Some of the residents that I worked with and remember with great fondness are Nigel, Michael (Jingle), Lenny, Rosie, Andrew, Peter and there were many more, whose names I cannot remember at the moment.
I had great support from many of the professional and caring staff, but also had much resistance and many battles to keep the project going. Yes; there were also very sad and distressing occurences which you felt powerless to do anything about, (so I do understand some of your earlier writers comments).
Anyway, to conclude for the moment, that research helped towards a much better understanding of the needs and provision of learning and leisure facilities for people with special needs.
I wonder if there is any relics left of the work that we did there?
