Barrow Gurney Hospital closed in 2006 and had the dubious honour of being the dirtiest hospital in the country. I can't even begin to write an introduction that details this location's history. If you are interested, please check out this excellent write up on Forlorn Britain.
Barrow Hospital occupies a huge, foresty site. Unfortunately time was against us, so we only saw a few buildings...

Butleigh Hospital is situated in a small village close to Glastonbury. It was built in 1882 and closed in 2005.
I have no external pictures, but one from 1955 can be found at the Francis Frith collection.

Colchester is quite a hotspot for closed hospitals. Apart from Severalls, there are at least two more...

Leybourne Grange is located right beside the M20 near Maidstone. That said, you wouldn't know it's there - it covers around 270 acres and is very tree-based. The trees (and fresh air etc) were meant to be good for the patients. 1200 patients.
It opened in 1936, was used for sixty years, and finally closed in 1996. There is a private school on the site which is still in use. The colony was built in the grounds of a huge manor house which still remains. The manor house also has an impressive clock tower.
A lot of the buildings are very well boarded up, but we managed to look in a few

Mansfield General Hospital closed during the 1990s. It was bought by a local businessman who intends to do something with the site, but hasn't yet. The hospital is also situated bang in the middle of a housing estate - the local residents are not pleased with the eyesore. And don't like strangers poking around in their area...

Sooo, with about 20 explores under the belt with no real problems, it's about time I had a bad one...
I recently paid a little visit to the hospital at Runwell, near Chelmsford, with Speed. Our first thoughts upon arriving were "this looks quite active". It was. We waited for the security guy to walk off on his rounds, and then we went for a little walk around the place. There were several old buildings but the were all very well boarded up.
There was one "compound" of closed buildings, but bang in the middle of them was a security hut. The other security gaurd-ette was cleaning her car. She was a total jobsworth. And she busted us as we were leaving.
Luckily Mr Two-Cameras pretended to delete the photos from the camera he wasn't using. Haha.
Actually, I'm not sure why I'm laughing. The very few pics I got aren't very interesting

Severalls Asylum was built in 1913. It closed in the late 1990s. In it's heyday it housed 2000 patients; some of which were used in experimental medical tests/operations.
Recently it has been sold for redevelopment. Apparently the whole site is to be demolished. I thought I should go for a quick (4 hour) look...

Went back to Severalls. The last visit barely scratched the surface! Also took my tripod this time - cue better pictures inside.
Or so I imagined.
Sadly we didn't get to the main complex, so we settled on exploring Myland Court. In the past this building housed a mother & baby unit, an occupational therapy department, and an E.C.T clinic..

On previous visits to Severalls I always managed to miss some things - like upstairs, cells and the morgue. Today I made another trip there to see these things... with success
Also met up with about 10 other members of 28DL which was quite fun!

A return visit to Severalls Asylum was on the cards after last month's slightly short trip. Went back with Abo for quite a successful little trip.
Where? Wolverhampton. Photos 48. Comments 8. Posted 24 January 2008.
Wolverhampton hospital opened in 1849, thanks to some local businessmen who decided that the town needed a hospital. Over the years it expanded, with new wings and operating facilities being built. It finally closed in 1997 when a new out-of-town hospital was built. Ten years later the buildings sit rotting away in Wolverhampton's city centre, suffering at the hands of vandals, vagrants and arsonists. Tesco apparently own the site, and work has begun on some regeneration in the area...
If you're interested in reading more about the hospital then this website has a far more detailed history.
