Cambois Railway Depot

Where? Northumberland. Comments 2. Posted 15 November 2008.

Cambois railway depot was a thriving depot up until the mid 1990s. The locomotives based there were mainly used by the nearby power station, which required huge amounts of coal trains to feed it. The power station closed and trains were no longer needed. Thus the depot was no longer needed either...

Last year all of the railway track in the yard was removed. All that remains is the old depot shed, a grounded railway van, a few pre-fabricated offices and a million tyres.

Chambers Wharf & Cold Stores Ltd

Where? London. Comments 1. Posted 2 October 2007.

Chambers Wharf is one of the last remaining dockside warehouses in central London. Many larger similar buildings have been demolished or redeveloped - indeed the same fate awaits this building.

It was initially built in the 1930s as a warehouse/cold store for imported meat and other food, and was used for this purpose up until the 1980s. A During the war, the military briefly used it; and there are rumours of bomb shelters underneath going under the Thames.

After closure, it was used as a gold bullion store & document store. Two episodes of The Professionals were also filmed there.

Epping Forest District Council Emergency Bunker

Where? North Weald. Comments 1. Posted 25 February 2007.

This bunker was used by the nearby airfield and used as an operations room. During the 1980's, the local council took the bunker over and used it as an emergency centre.

As always, SubBrit has an excellent piece explaining what this place was for, and shows some interesting pre-fire photos.

Pingley PoW Camp

Where? Lincolnshire. Comments 30. Posted 7 July 2007.

During WWII, a prisoner of war camp was built on the outskirts of Brigg, in Lincolnshire. It was used to house around 750 Italian and Germany prisoners. There were 35 huts on site - 23 for prisoners and the remainder for guards.

During the 1950s, the role of the site was drastically changed - it was used as a holiday camp. Well, a farming-holiday camp for the local farm. People would book in for a week, have a bit of a holiday and work on the farm. It closed during the 1980s. Some parts are still used by the farm to store machinery, but it is in a rather bad state.

RAF Shepherds Grove

Where? Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Comments 53. Posted 12 August 2006.

RAF Shepherds Grove is located on the outskirts of the sleepy Suffolk village of Stanton. It was built during WW2 as an airfield for bombers. During the Cold War in the 1950's the USAF took over and based jet fighters there. When the jet fighters left, part of the base was used as a launch site for Thor nuclear missles.

The site closed in 1966 and some of the base is now an industrial estate.

April 2007 update - The control tower, fire station and industrial units have now been flattened.

RAF Watton

Where? Watton, Norfolk. Comments 60. Posted 12 August 2006.

RAF Watton closed in 1991 and sold in 1998. The residential areas were sold for residential use; and most of the technical buildings have been demolished, ie control towers, water towers, boiler rooms etc.

Four hangars remain and what is thought to be an old armoury. Everything was stupidly trashed though - that didn't deter us from the explore..

RAF Watton revisited

Where? Watton, Norfolk. Comments 18. Posted 7 April 2007.

I was up in Norfolk recently so paid a quick re-visit to RAF Watton to try out my "new" camera. If anyone remembers my report from July, you will know that there were four hangars and a little building remaining. Well, that's changed slightly now...

[There are no thumbnails in this report, just medium-sized images]

Wolverhampton Royal Hospital

Where? Wolverhampton. Comments 20. Posted 24 January 2008.

Wolverhampton hospital opened in 1849, thanks to some local businessmen who decided that the town needed a hospital. Over the years it expanded, with new wings and operating facilities being built. It finally closed in 1997 when a new out-of-town hospital was built. Ten years later the buildings sit rotting away in Wolverhampton's city centre, suffering at the hands of vandals, vagrants and arsonists. Tesco apparently own the site, and work has begun on some regeneration in the area...

If you're interested in reading more about the hospital then this website has a far more detailed history.
